Shadow Diplomacy Project applies a structured, framework-driven approach to the analysis of contested sovereignty and international relations. This methodology governs the production of every memo published under the initiative.
1. Research Orientation
Each memo begins with a research question rather than a predetermined position. The objective is analytical clarity, not advocacy.
2. Case Selection
Cases are selected for their analytical value in illuminating contested sovereignty dynamics, not for visibility or media prominence. The rationale for selecting each case is stated explicitly, so that the reasoning behind inclusion is transparent to the reader.
3. Evidentiary Standards
Primary sources form the evidentiary foundation of this research. These include treaties, United Nations resolutions, government white papers, and official statements. Secondary literature, including academic scholarship and think-tank analysis, is used to contextualize and sharpen argument, not to substitute for primary evidence.
4. Analytical Frameworks
Every substantive claim is evaluated through a named analytical framework before inclusion in a memo. Frameworks employed include, but are not limited to, Nye’s theory of soft power, realist balance-of-power analysis, and constructivist approaches to legitimacy. The framework applied in each case is stated explicitly, and conclusions are not permitted to exceed what that framework can support.
5. Verification
Factual claims are triangulated against a minimum of two independent sources before being presented as established. No single source, regardless of its perceived credibility, is treated as sufficient on its own.
6. Scope and Limitations
Each memo explicitly delineates the boundaries of its claims. Sovereignty disputes are inherently resistant to confident prediction, and this research treats that resistance as a methodological constraint to be respected, not an obstacle to be written around.
